What Do We Mean By Non-Toxic?
Non-toxic nail care is the use of products that are free from harmful ingredients proven to cause health issues. Among these ingredients are those known as the “Toxic Trio” or the “Big 3”: DBP, Toluene, and Formaldehyde.
Formaldehyde is a chemical that is a component in plywood and particleboard, and is often used as a preservative, sterilizer, and embalmer. This chemical is also added to polishes that are considered "nail hardeners”, and has been linked to nasal and lung cancers by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
Dibutyl Phthalate, or DBP, is added to nail polish to make it more flexible and less prone to cracks, chips, and other annoyances. This chemical, however, has been linked to reproductive issues and is even banned in Europe. While it is still approved for use in the United States, many women choose to avoid it.
Toluene, for smooth polish application, is associated with nervous system issues, including dizziness, headaches, and birth defects. The European Union bans toluene, but the United States does not.
At Nothing in Between, our commitment to non-toxic nail care goes beyond avoiding polishes that contain the "Toxic Trio." We also exclude certain nail services such as SNS, dip powder, acrylic, hard gels and nail extensions. Why? These services can weaken natural nails, making them brittle, thin, and susceptible to damage.
It's important to note that the individuals most at risk from the negative effects of these chemicals are not only our clients but also our dedicated nail service providers who face regular exposure. Protecting their health is a top priority. The heightened risk of birth defects and miscarriages associated with ongoing exposure underscores the importance of our pursuit of non-toxic nail care.
Our non-toxic nail care approach prioritizes the health and well-being of both clients and employees, aiming to create a safer environment and raise awareness about the potential health risks associated with nail care services that use harmful ingredients.
NIB Sustainability Practice Spotlight:
Pedicure Slippers
As you may be aware, we’ve made a change in our practices at Nothing in Between regarding the provision of disposable slippers for pedicures. While our decision is rooted in our commitment to sustainability, we understand that there may be instances where you forget to bring your own slippers or simply don't have the opportunity to retrieve them from home. To address this, we now offer regular flip-flops that you can purchase for $10 — which you can return for reimbursement after the fact (as long as the flip flops are returned to us in good condition). This gift card can be used during your next NIB visit!
*Please keep in mind that preserving the original condition of these slippers is crucial to their reuse by another client and to support our environmental sustainability efforts.
